Dehydration is a major issue, with Brummer noting an alarming increase in cases compared to previous years. Luke Waclawek, founder of Oxfordshire Wildlife Rescue, agrees, noting that all wildlife, from the tiniest mice to larger animals like deer, is affected. However, he points out that hedgehogs seem to be particularly vulnerable, with a significant rise in dehydrated and orphaned individuals.
The problem extends beyond the direct heat impact. Waclawek explains that the hard ground, a result of the heat, has depleted the hedgehogs' vital food source, insects. This has led to a surge in dehydrated hedgehogs being rescued. The RSPCA's figures support this, showing a 30% increase in the number of dehydrated and orphaned hedgehogs compared to 2025.
Despite the dire situation, there are simple actions individuals can take to help. Waclawek suggests letting a square meter of garden grow wild, attracting a variety of wildlife. He also recommends placing a small bowl of water with pebbles for insects, as they are essential for the ecosystem. Brummer agrees, adding that pebbles or gravel in the water slow evaporation, creating a haven for insects and birds, especially hedgehogs.
